OVERVIEW

SYNOPSIS "Catapum. Nowhere to fall".

From the Colombian coast to New York City, Nowhere to Fall is a powerful story of three women from 3 generations, who found in the Bullerengue a way to resist, heal and celebrate life. From their routines, their territory and their songs, they tell the story of their lives and this ancestral tradition called Bullerengue, bringing out themes like oral tradition, race, community, immigration and identity.

Their personal experiences converge in a collective memory, offering a narrative of the Colombian armed conflict that honors the healing and reconciling power of music.

OUR CHARACTERS

  • 7 years after being displaced from her hometown in the Caribbean Region of Colombia, Ceferina Banquez (79yo) was able to return home. For her, a descendant of Afro-Colombian Bullerengue singers, her ancestral music is a powerful tool to heal her community in the aftermath of violence & displacement.

  • In Montes de María, Pabla Flores (67yo) has dedicated her life to honoring the legacy of her mother by singing the Bullerengue herself. Pabla is preserving and passing on this tradition to new generations.

  • For Carolina Oliveros (35yo), a young Colombian immigrant in NY,  bullerengue is an anchor that keeps her connected to her roots and identity. Carolina funded the Bullerengue group Bulla en el Barrio, becoming one of the ambassadors of the Bullerengue in the US.

For these women, this tradition touches all aspects of life, from ancestral life philosophies and social protest to personal anecdotes, recipes, and daily activities.

WE NEED YOUR HELP

  • Equity: Amplify the voice of the singers through the screening of the documentary, to support their work in music as a way of life and economic activity.

  • Inclusion: Bring the experience of the film, the conversation, and performance to the territories in Colombia and to communities without access to this content in the United States.

  • Diversity: Share the experience of bullerengue with different people in the US who don’t know about it and may enjoy this ancestral music and history.

  • Healing: we want to create an experience where we can share the film and the knowledge of this tradition to create conversations about resistance and healing through arts and music. The film and the live music in the same space are a powerful combination to involve the community opening up a space for sharing and celebration.

We need money to make our social impact campaing happen.

We are looking for  donations in cash and in kind to sponsor the trips and activities of the Colombian singers in the United States and abroad. Each trip of a singer involves at least 5 people which raise the costs of the events, but each event can touch many hearts and create a process of healing through music and arts which is priceless.

We also want your help to support our singers’ efforts in their own communities where they are implementing workshops for children and activities for women who have found in bullerengue a way to live and cope with the trauma generated by the armed conflict and forced displacement. We want them to be able to make a living through the teaching and sharing of this old knowledge.

So every little helps.
